Emotional intelligence (EI) is one of the most widely discussed topics in current psychology. Although first mentioned in the professional literature nearly two decades ago, in the past five years it has received extensive media attention. The term “emotional intelligence” refers to the ability to identify, express, and understand emotions; to assimilate emotions into thought; and to regulate both positive and negative emotions in oneself and others. The first of several plots in the novel is the central idea surrounding the small Montana town of Two Rivers, and the town government’s plans to allow Guantanamo Bay prisoners to be moved to the town’s new, and largely empty, prison. This puts Two Rivers on the national news scene, it also gets them out of several jams, mostly financial, but gets them into many more, mostly terrorist.

What really sells Two Rivers’ parade of problems is the book’s amazingly vivid cast. Heading up the cast is local lawyer Gabriel Lantagne who really plays strait to the larger insanity of his surrounding Montanans. Gabe is hired by the recklessly ambitious Mayor Phoenix Jamborsky to handle the legalities of such a controversial decision. Gabe serves mostly as a rational voice to supply the reader with information. The real stars of the show are Phoenix, who is Palin-like, but with a political brilliance that would give Carl Rove a run for his money, and the local town sheriff, Pasquali, who gives the town a rough edged intelligence that small town’s flatter themselves with.

Together, Pasquali and Phoenix create an amazing dynamic; small town secrets vs. national political secrets. The clash also works as a mirror between small government and big government. But Leibig doesn’t concern himself so much with social commentary or covert political message. He’s interested in exploring the premise. Ahmed is another remarkable player in the “Montanamo” house of cards. His journey runs both parallel and on a collision course with Two Rivers’ (yes, in fiction that’s possible).

The list of subplots becomes so kinetically charged that it’s difficult not to turn pages as fast as you can read them. Leibig’s work feels a lot like the television show “24”, ripping its plot from the latest headlines and running with them. It’s more of a political drama than a thriller, even if there are murders and a terrorist plot. Much of the action seems to take place in dialogue between any number of characters but the pace is so fast, the dialogue so clean, and the characters so rich that it feels like a thriller. “Montanamo” is nothing short of a Christopher Leibig novel.

Somebody give this man a contract and put this book on store shelves everywhere. These are the kind of books I like to see!

Alessandra Celletti’s proposed book presents classical celestial mechanics and its interplay with dynamical systems in a way that would be suitable for advance level undergraduate students as well as postgraduate students and researchers. First she uses paradigmatic models, such as the logistic map or the standard map, to introduce the reader to the concepts of order, chaos, invariant curves, cantori, etc. The main numerical methods to investigate a dynamical system are presented: Poincare’ maps, Lyapunov exponents, frequency analysis, Fast Lyapunov Indicators, etc. Then she reviews the classical two-body problem and proceeds to explore the three-body model in order to investigate orbital resonances and Lagrange solutions. As far as rotational dynamics are concerned, she details the derivation of the rigid body motion, and continues by discussing related topics, from spin-orbit resonances to dumbbell satellite dynamics.

Perturbation theory is then explored in full detail, both in classical, resonant and degenerate cases; practical examples of the application of perturbation theory are presented in connection to the precession of the perihelion or to the precession of the equinoxes. The main ideas of KAM theory are provided, and also a dissipative version of the theorem is discussed; furthermore long-term stability and converse KAM results are presented. She then explains the implementation of computer-assisted techniques, which allow the user to obtain rigorous results in good agreement with the astronomical expectations.

A perturbative approach to find periodic orbits is presented together with an application to the computation of the libration in longitude of the Moon. The study of collisions in the solar system is approached through regularization theory.

This text offers a mathematically rigorous exposition of the basic theory of marked point processes developing randomly over time, and shows how this theory may be used to treat piecewise deterministic stochastic processes in continuous time.

The focus is on point processes that generate only finitely many points in finite time intervals, resulting in piecewise deterministic processes with “few jumps”. The point processes are constructed from scratch with detailed proofs and their distributions characterized using compensating measures and martingale structures. Piecewise deterministic processes are defined and identified with certain marked point processes, which are then used in particular to construct and study a large class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes, whether time homogeneous or not.

The second part of the book addresses applications of the just developed theory. This analysis of various models in applied statistics and probability includes examples and exercises in survival analysis, branching processes, ruin probabilities, sports (soccer), finance and risk management (arbitrage and portfolio trading strategies), and queueing theory.

Graduate students and researchers interested in probabilistic modeling and its applications will find this text an excellent resource, requiring for mastery a solid foundation in probability theory, measure and integration, as well as some knowledge of stochastic processes and martingales. However, an explanatory introduction to each chapter highlights those portions that are crucial and those that can be omitted by non-specialists, making the material more accessible to a wider cross-disciplinary audience.
