Alessandra Celletti’s proposed book presents classical celestial mechanics and its interplay with dynamical systems in a way that would be suitable for advance level undergraduate students as well as postgraduate students and researchers. First she uses paradigmatic models, such as the logistic map or the standard map, to introduce the reader to the concepts of order, chaos, invariant curves, cantori, etc. The main numerical methods to investigate a dynamical system are presented: Poincare’ maps, Lyapunov exponents, frequency analysis, Fast Lyapunov Indicators, etc. Then she reviews the classical two-body problem and proceeds to explore the three-body model in order to investigate orbital resonances and Lagrange solutions. As far as rotational dynamics are concerned, she details the derivation of the rigid body motion, and continues by discussing related topics, from spin-orbit resonances to dumbbell satellite dynamics.

Perturbation theory is then explored in full detail, both in classical, resonant and degenerate cases; practical examples of the application of perturbation theory are presented in connection to the precession of the perihelion or to the precession of the equinoxes. The main ideas of KAM theory are provided, and also a dissipative version of the theorem is discussed; furthermore long-term stability and converse KAM results are presented. She then explains the implementation of computer-assisted techniques, which allow the user to obtain rigorous results in good agreement with the astronomical expectations.

Anh cắn nhẹ và lả lướt vào những vùng nhạy cảm… Anh nhấc hẳn hông tôi lên, bất ngờ… anh rút sợi dây thun trong túi quần ra và rủ tôi chơi búng thun.

Tôi quíu cả hai chân lại và rú lên, nó ran rát và đau. Từ thuở cha sinh mẹ đẻ đến giờ, có cho vàng tôi không nghĩ chơi búng thun ăn hột dưa vào buổi tối lại thú vị đến thế.

Tôi lạnh cóng và bóp chặt hai lòng bàn tay vào nhau, còn anh như một con thú hoang hổn hển ra vào, hết búng cọng thun sang trái lại búng cọng thun sang phải. Lần nào anh cũng thắng, cả túi hột dưa anh ăn đã gần hết còn tôi thì chỉ mới ăn dược có vài hột. Cổ họng tôi rên rỉ bằng những tiếng rên run rẩy, cắn răng nuốt nước miếng vì cơn thèm hột dưa đang đến hồi đỉnh điểm …”

Anh ấy dắt tôi đến một khu phố Tàu để dạo chơi. Dọc khu phố là những gánh hàng rong, nhiều lồng đèn hoa được treo hai bên đường, có những tửu quán được bài trí như thời thập niên tám mươi, vài cặp tình nhân vui vẻ say sưa, ôm hôn nhau không quan tâm những ánh mắt chung quanh… Có một cặp lướt ngang mặt tôi cười mỉa.

- Đến đây mà còn ra vẻ đài các nữa làm gì, mắt cứ nhìn như chưa bao giờ nhìn thấy người. Đúng là đồ nhà quê.

Lần đầu tiên tôi đến đây nên không tránh khỏi sự tò mò. Đi tiếp một khoảng đường nữa tôi như lạc vào mê cung, tôi như quên có anh đi bên cạnh, nơi đây một số phụ nữ tươi mát và đàn ông qua lại như đang buông mồi câu khách… Có cả những phụ nữ lớn tuổi cũng đang cười đùa ve vãn đàn ông, nhìn vào những góc tối, từng cặp đang ve vuốt hôn nhau, tiếng gió rít trên tay làm tôi ớn cả sống lưng ở nơi hoan lạc này. Đến lúc này tôi vẫn không biết anh ấy đưa tôi đến đây để làm gì, anh chỉ luôn miệng hỏi tôi với vẻ mặt đầy hào hứng.

- Em thấy vui không?

Rồi anh đưa tôi lên một con tàu, đang cặp bến chờ khách, con tàu có cái tên “Nhớ mãi” nhiều cặp đổ xô xuống tàu, trong đó có tôi và anh, trên tàu có nhiều căn phòng bằng ván đóng cạnh nhau, tiếng gió hú hoà cùng tiếng nhạc văng vẳng, làm cho tôi nổi cả gai ốc. Khách ở đây có người nôn nóng hối hả, có kẻ rụt rè cúi mặt như muốn giấu điều gì. Tàu vừa nhổ neo, mọi người vào số phòng của mình, và cặp của tôi cũng được một phòng.

Vách của những căn phòng, không ngăn được những tiếng thở thôi thúc, những tiếng rên man dại hòa cùng tiếng nhạc khiến tôi không thể chịu được, tôi bắt đầu buông mình cùng thanh âm nhức nhối đó.

Anh ấy bắt đầu chạm vào người tôi và nói:

- Anh như một kẻ đói khát lâu ngày, mình sẽ bắt đầu bước vào cuộc thử nghiệm khác những gì trước đây, xin em hãy đón chào nó, em hãy để cho anh đưa em vào miền hoan lạc, hành hạ đôi ta trong niềm khóai cảm và đừng cưỡng lại sự lạ lẫm cho dù nó có là đau đớn.

Cả hai nhìn nhau như chuẩn bị cho khúc dạo đầu, trong mắt anh lửa đang đỏ lên như một con báo hoang khát mồi, anh bắt đầu hôn lên khắp người tôi, cả hai như muốn tan chảy vào nhau hứa hẹn một cuộc mây mưa hoàn hảo, anh tắt cả những ngọn đèn mờ ảo trong phòng, tôi nghĩ nếu anh tắt đèn chắc sẽ tự tin hơn. Tôi thả mình theo bóng tối, anh lấy khăn choàng cổ trói hai tay tôi lại. Ôi anh muốn chơi trò gì đây?

Tôi tò mò và chờ đợi những điều lạ lẫm ấy…

Anh đã làm tôi ẩm ướt và nóng bỏng, tôi nẩy người lên, đê mê như muốn anh nuốt cả bầu ngực tôi vào miệng… Tôi tê dại cả người, có cái gì đó như đang cương cứng mấp mé giữa đôi chân của tôi, làm tôi càng thôi thúc, hứng tình nhiều hơn… anh cắn nhẹ và lả lướt vào những vùng nhạy cảm… Anh nhấc hẳn hông tôi lên, bất ngờ anh nhấn vào rồi từ từ đẩy sâu vào bên trong. Tôi quíu cả hai chân lại và rú lên, nó ran rát và đau, tôi lạnh cóng và bóp chặt hai lòng bàn tay vào nhau, còn anh như một con thú hoang hổn hển ra vào, dịch chuyển rồi lại phi nhanh, cổ họng tôi rên rỉ bằng những tiếng rên run rẩy, cắn răng nếm đau đớn đi cùng sự khoái cảm đang dâng trào…

Nẩy người, tay tôi đã vuột khỏi khăn trói tay, anh vẫn còn đang hổn hển với những vũ khúc, tôi đau đớn như đang bị xé da thịt, lấy tay mình tự ve vuốt lên ngực rồi mò mẫm xuống phía dưới chỗ anh đang… Tôi hoảng hốt bật đèn sáng lên!

Một sự thật kinh hòang! Tôi hét lên và tung cửa chạy ra ngoài, trượt té xuống …

Con mắt tôi lờ đờ, chao đảo, không biết mình sống hay đã chết, trong đầu toàn những hình ảnh khốn nạn của ngày hôm qua, tôi khép chặt đôi mi mà ứa lệ. Tôi ức nghẹn không nói nên lời, chỉ ước gì trong lúc này mình đủ sức để giết được kẻ khốn đó! Nước mắt tôi cứ tuôn trào vì những hành động đau đớn mà anh đã dành cho tôi.

Quỷ quái cho cuộc đời tôi, tôi nhìn anh mà đầy căm hận, trong người tôi lúc này như ai đang xé nát! tôi không ngờ anh biến tôi thành một trò chơi đồi bại bẩn thỉu như vậy! Món dương vật giả đã cướp mất trinh trắng của tôi, ôi! Không có gì đau bằng, thằng chồng ngu xuẩn bệnh hoạn đã làm cho tôi thấy cuộc đời tối đen, đang nằm trong một ống cống thối tha nhất trên đời! Mỗi lần nhìn thấy anh tôi như đang thấy món dương vật vô tri, vô giác ấy. Cuộc đời con gái tôi giữ gìn, hôm nay lại biến thành trò chơi kinh tởm của anh! Có phải tôi đang sống trong địa ngục, kẻ vô tâm cho tôi thấy cuộc đời này toàn màu đen. Người tôi rã rời, cổ tôi như có ai đang cắt, kiệt sức, liệt giường. Tôi như một cái xác không hồn chờ ngày được chôn.

Bridges are great symbols of mankind’s conquest of space. They are a monument to his vision and determination, but these alone are not enough. An appreciation of the mathematical theories underlying bridge design is essential to resist the physical forces of nature and gravity.

I live, practice, teach, and build in northwest Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It’s a place considered to be in the middle of nowhere, yet ironically close to everywhere. Abandonment, exploitation, erasure and nostalgia are all aspects of this place and are conditions as authentic as its natural beauty and local form. This land of disparate conditions in not just a setting for my work — it is part of the work.
